From Middle English tohewen, from Old English tōhēawan (to hew in pieces, chop up), from Proto-Germanic *tehawwaną (to cut to pieces), equivalent to to- + hew. Cognate with Old Frisian tehawa, Middle Low German tohouwen, Dutch tehouwen, German zerhauen (to chop up, hack).
