Albanian

Etymology

Unclear. From Proto-Indo-European *dʰonu (fir), with phonetic problems. Compare Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, thicket), Hittite [script needed] (tanau, fir), German Tann (woods), Tanne (fir), Breton tann (red oak). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *tsàna, from earlier Mediterranean substrate word *ḱastnà. Compare Ancient Greek κᾰ́στᾰνᾰ (kástana, chestnut) and Old Armenian կասկ (kask).
