Etymology

No cognates exist in other Germanic languages: perhaps borrowed from Latin papyrus (via an unattested form *papur), which in later use also meant ‘candle-wick’ (compare Spanish pabilo (candlewick)). In early Middle English glossaries, Latin papyrus was glossed as taper. See also German Kerze (candle), ultimately from Greek χαρτης (chartis, papyrus).
