Etymology
A wanderword, the immediate source is uncertain. Compare German Safran, French safran, Italian zafferano. Ultimately from Arabic زَعْفَرَان (zaʿfarān), from Persian *زرپران (*zar-parân, literally “with golden leaves”).[1]
