From Middle Dutch sukereye, a folk etymological interpretation of chicorei, from Old French cicoree, from Late Latin *cichōria, from Latin cichōrium, from Ancient Greek κιχώριον (kikhṓrion). Forms doublets with chicorei and cichorei. Synchronically equivalent to suiker (“sugar”) +‎ -ij (“a suffix that forms abstract nouns”).

Cognate to English chicory and succory, the latter being a borrowing from the same Middle Dutch source.
