Etymology

From Old High German strewen, from Proto-Germanic *strawjaną (“to strew”), from Proto-Indo-European *strew- (“to spread, strew”). Cognate with German streuen, Dutch strooien, English strew, Icelandic strá, Swedish strö, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌾𐌰𐌽 (straujan). From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Latin struō (“I build, prepare, arrange”).
