stable fly

English

The most widely recognized species of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, resembles a smallish housefly, but, instead of the sponging mouthparts of a housefly, has a hard, dark, forward-projecting proboscis, capable of piercing an animal's skin for sucking blood.

  1. Any of several medium-sized flies in the genus Stomoxys, of the family Muscidae that includes the housefly. The genus is unusual among members of that family, in that they suck blood from mammals.
