From Dutch spoegen (“to spit”), a dialectal variant of spugen (“to spit; to vomit”), reformed from spuwen (by analogy with its older strong past tense spoog), from Middle Dutch spuwen, from Old Dutch *spīwan, *spiuwan, from Proto-Germanic *spīwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (“to spit, vomit”).
