From Dutch spoegen (to spit), a dialectal variant of spugen (to spit; to vomit), reformed from spuwen (by analogy with its older strong past tense spoog), from Middle Dutch spuwen, from Old Dutch *spīwan, *spiuwan, from Proto-Germanic *spīwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (to spit, vomit).
