Etymology

From Latin spongia (sponge) (with a change in gender), compare Romanian spânz; metaphorically applied to horse diseases, as in Spanish espundia (skin ulcer (in horses)), Sardinian spòngia, ispunzòla (wobbler syndrome); ultimately from Ancient Greek σπογγιά (spongiá). Cf. also Albanian spëndër.
