Etymology

From the same stem as Latvian slīdēt (to slide) and slaids (slender, slim): Proto-Baltic *slid + -ens, from Proto-Indo-European *sleydʰ- (slippery, to slide). A dialectal variant slids (slippery), without the suffix, also exists (compare Lithuanian slidùs (slippery)).[1]
