From Old French selunc (Eleventh century), from earlier solonc, sulonc, then sulunc, probably from a Vulgar Latin *sublungum (along), from Latin sub (in the sense of near) + longum (accusative of longus).

Alternatively from a supposed, primitive Old French *seon or from son (itself from Latin secundum (of sequor ("to follow") or " immediately after "," according to, following, according to ".); compare Old Occitan segon(according to), later crossed with long, lonc.
