searbăd

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • sarbăd, searbed

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly a substratum connection with Albanian tharbët (sour, acrid) (or derived/borrowed from it), or less likely from an alteration of Latin fervidus through a hypothetical intermediate *sfearbăd with the prefix s-, from ex-. Other theories include Vulgar Latin roots *subalbidus (whitish), *exalbidus, from albidus, or *salvidus, from salvia.
