scălan
Romanian
Etymology
Unknown. A theory suggests that it might come from Proto-Indo-European *kelH-, cognate with Latin collis (“hill”), Lithuanian kalnas (“hill, mountain; heap”), Old English hyll (“hill”), Albanian kallume (“big pile”) and Romanian căluș (“small pile; pile of planks”). More than likely we have two homonymous roots in order to explain all the meanings.
