scălan

Romanian

Etymology

Unknown. A theory suggests that it might come from Proto-Indo-European *kelH-, cognate with Latin collis (hill), Lithuanian kalnas (hill, mountain; heap), Old English hyll (hill), Albanian kallume (big pile) and Romanian căluș (small pile; pile of planks). More than likely we have two homonymous roots in order to explain all the meanings.
