scutec

Romanian

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from Slavic skutŭ, or from Vulgar Latin *scuticum, from Latin scutica (a leather lash, whip), probably confused with derivatives of cutis (leather) (compare cutica). Therefore, the meaning could have changed from a leather belt to that of fabric or cloth in general. Cognate to Aromanian scutic.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsku.tek/

Noun

scutec n (plural scutece)

  1. nappy, diaper (an absorbent garment worn by a baby, or by someone who is incontinent.)
