Etymology

From Irish scrath (“a turf”), sgraith (“a turf, green sod”), akin to Goidelic sgrath, sgroth (“the outer skin of anything, a turf, a green sod”).

  1. A sod of grass-grown turf from the surface of a bog or from a field.
  2. A turf covering the roof of a cottage beneath the thatch.
