Latin sciaena (“a kind of sea fish, perhaps a kind of grayling or ombre: Thymallus thymallus”), from Ancient Greek σκίαινα (skíaina, “a sea fish, probably either Sciaena umbra or Umbrina cirrosa”), +‎ -oid.
