From Old Frisian tzirke, tzerke, from late Proto-Germanic *kirikǭ, an early borrowing of Ancient Greek κυριακόν (kuriakón). Cognate with Sylt North Frisian Sērk, Föhr-Amrum North Frisian sark, Saterland Frisian Säärke, West Frisian tsjerke, English church.
