From Middle Low German slingeren, iterative of slingen, which latter is cognate with German schlingen, English sling. The iterative also in Dutch slingeren.

  1. (of a ship, car, or other vehicle) to skid, to swerve, to fishtail, to roll (move in uncontrolled manner shaking from side to side)
  2. (of a person, e.g. a drunk one) to lurch
