Etymology

From Old Occitan esquiera, from Old French eschiere[1], ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skarō, whence also Old English scearu, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to part; split; cut off; sever; divide”). Compare German Schar (“troop”).
