From Middle Dutch schedele, from Old Dutch skēthila, *skeithila (part, crown, crest, summit), from Proto-Germanic *skaidilō (part in the hair, top, crown, crest, summit), from Proto-Indo-European *skÁit- (to cut, part, separate). Cognate with German Scheitel (part, crest, apex).
