From Proto-Germanic *skaiþiz, possibly from a root *skaiþ- (“divide, separate”), based on the notion of a split stick with a sword blade inserted; compare *skaiþaną (“separate”). Compare Old Frisian skethe, Old Saxon scethia, Old High German sceida, skaida, Old Norse skeið, skeiðir.
