ræðari

Icelandic

Etymology

Attested since the 18th century. Same as Faroese røðari. Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon does not give the exact derivation, but the Icelandic and Faroese forms are probably derived from a late Old Norse form *rœðari. Confer the attested Old Norse forms rœði and rœðir and German Ruderer. Ultimately from the root of the verb róa (to row) (Proto-Germanic *rōaną).
