From Proto-Finnic *rohkeda, from earlier *rošketa, probably borrowed from a Germanic language (cf. Proto-Germanic *raskuz, Old Norse rǫskr ). Cognate with Ingrian rohkia, Karelian rohkei, Veps rohked and Votic rõhkõa.
