From Proto-Germanic *rugiz, whence also Old Saxon roggo (Low German Rogg), Dutch rogge, Old English ryġe (English rye), Old Frisian rogga (West Frisian rogge),Old Norse rugr (Norwegian and Danish rug, Swedish råg). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wrugʰyo- (compare Russian рожь (rožʹ) and Old Prussian rugis).
