Ultimately from negation of Latin probō (I test, approve), via Medieval Latin reimprobō (I reprove). Compare French réprouver (to reprove) from Late Latin reprobō (I disapprove, condemn) and Spanish improbar (to disapprove) from Latin improbō (I disapprove, condemn).
