From Proto-Finnic *raha, from Proto-Germanic *skrahā (squirrel skin) (later Proto-Germanic *skrahō). Compare Old Norse skrá. Originally, this meant the fur of squirrel, since that was a payment instrument before bills and coins were introduced.
