From Proto-Turkic *kādïn (relative-in-law), whence also qayınana (mother-in-law) and qayınata (father-in-law). Compare Turkish kayın (in law), Tatar каенага (qayenağa, older brother of one's wife), and каенэне (qayenene, younger brother of one's wife).
