Czech

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *per-, from Proto-Indo-European *per-.[1]

Prefix

pře-

  1. re- (attempt differently)
  2. over- (excessively)
  3. out- (surpassing, exceeding; to surpass, to exceed)

Usage notes

In the re- sense, pře- gives emphasis to the fact that something is being done in another way, rather than again, where znovu- ("anew") would be used instead.
