From Proto-Slavic *pęstь. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian пест, pest, Slovene pest, Russian пясть (pjastʹ, middle part of the hand) and запястье (zapjastʹje), dialectal Bulgarian (Western dialects) пестник (pestnik), песник (pesnik), пестница (pestnica). Compare Ancient Greek πυγμή (pugmḗ), English fist, German Faust.
