purje

Finnish

(index pu)

Etymology

Borrowed from a Baltic language, compare Lithuanian burė, Latvian bura. A minority opinion is that the Lithuanian term might have been borrowed from Latvian which, in turn, borrowed from Finnic, see bura for more. Alternatively borrowed from Proto-Germanic *buriz (favourable wind).
