Originally a diminutive of ptak (now archaic), from Proto-Slavic *pъtakъ, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (to fly). Cognate with Upper Sorbian ptak, Polish ptak, Czech pták, Russian пта́шка (ptáška), and Serbo-Croatian pátak.
