Either from Swedish brun or Middle Low German brûn. Cognate to Norwegian brun, Danish brun, Low German bruun, Dutch bruin, English brown, German braun. Ultimately derived from Proto-Germanic *brūnaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰruHn-, enlargement of *bʰrew- (shiny, brown)
