Of Slavic origin; from Old Church Slavonic попъ (popŭ), from Ancient Greek παπάς (papás), variant of πάππας (páppas, daddy, papa). Compare also Aromanian popã, pãpã. Or alternatively, and less likely, from Latin popa, papa, hence its presence in other neighbour languages.
