pomujo

Esperanto

Etymology

From pomo (an apple) + -ujo (container for).

Pronunciation

  • (file)
  • IPA(key): /pomˈujo/
  • Hyphenation: pom‧u‧jo
  • Rhymes: -ujo

Noun

pomujo (accusative singular pomujon, plural pomujoj, accusative plural pomujojn)

  1. a container for collecting apples, like a barrel or basket
  2. Obsolete form of pomarbo (apple tree).

Usage notes

The archaic usage of the suffix -ujo (container for) to make words for fruit trees comes from the Fundamento de Esperanto, but this was soon supplanted by making compounds with arbo (tree). Only early Esperanto materials use pomujo for "apple tree".
