Etymology

From Ripuarian Central Franconian and Low Franconian pengelig, pingelig, derived from Peng, Ping (pain), hence originally in the sense of German wehleidig (over-sensitive, whiny). Formally a doublet of German peinlich (embarrassing). Compare also peinlich genau, überpeinlich (punctilious, meticulous).
