From Proto-Indo-European *poyHnos, *peyHnos. Cognate with Latvian piẽns (milk), Sanskrit पयस् (páyas, milk), Persian پینو (pīnū, butter-milk). Related to dialectal Žemaitian pýti (to start to give milk) (< Proto-Indo-European zero-grade *piH-).
