Uncertain. Possibly linked to Ancient Greek πιττάκιον (pittákion) (cf. Latin pittacium (“label; patch”)), or from a Vulgar Latin root *piticus. Compare Aromanian peatic (“rag, scrap, patch”), peaticã, Calabrian pettica ("leather band, strip"); cf. also Spanish pedazo (“piece”).
