peníz

Czech

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *pěnędzь, which was borrowed from some Germanic term, probably from Old High German phenning (a kind of coin), which comes from an older Old High German form phendi(n)g. Older origin is not clear, sometimes it is being connected with Latin pondus (weight).[1] Compare Czech pence, English penny and German Pfennig.
