Etymology

From Ancient Greek Παρθενόπη (Parthenópē), name of a Greek settlement (9th c. BCE) which later became Neāpolis (“Naples”, literally “new city”), 6th c. BCE. The name is from the siren Parthenope whose body was said to have been washed ashore nearby.
