From Middle English overgilden, from Old English ofergyldan (to encase, overlay, or adorn with gold), from Proto-Germanic *uber (over) + *gulþijaną (to deck with gold), equivalent to over- + gild. Cognate with German übergülden, übergolden (to overgild).
