Alteration (probably under influence of Gaulish) of arteil, from Old French [Term?] from Vulgar Latin *articlus < Latin articulus. Cf. the borrowed doublet article. Compare Occitan artelh, Catalan artell, Portuguese artelho, Spanish artejo.
