onni

See also: Onni, õnni, and onni-

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *onni. Cognates include Estonian õnn, Votic õnni, and Northern Sami vuodna. Further etymology is however unknown, and the word may actually be a newer derivative from onsi (hollow, space, place) (compare ontelo) by generalization from inflected forms such as onnen. In older Finnish the meaning "one's share in life" is attested, bridging the semantic difference part-way. Alternately, the word may be of Germanic origin.
