oligodendrocyte (plural oligodendrocytes)

  1. (biology) Any of the cells of the oligodendroglia in the nervous system
    • 1933, LB Cox, “The cytology of the glioma group; with special reference to the inclusion of cells derived from the invaded tissue”, in The American Journal of Pathology:
      With the Hortega silver carbonate stain, or one of its modifications, oligodendrocytes are observed. These cells are usually small and correspond to the small cortical oligodendrocyte of Robertson.
