First attested in 1656, from Latin octagonos, from Ancient Greek ὀκτάγωνος (oktágōnos, eight-angled), from ὀκτώ (oktṓ, eight) + γωνία (gōnía, angle). The adjective octagonal was first mentioned from 1571.
