First attested in 1656, from Latin octagonos, from Ancient Greek ὀκτάγωνος (oktágōnos, “eight-angled”), from ὀκτώ (oktṓ, “eight”) + γωνία (gōnía, “angle”). The adjective octagonal was first mentioned from 1571.
