From Proto-Vietic *ɗaːk (water), from Proto-Austroasiatic *ɗaːk (water). Cognates within Mon-Khmer include Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects nác, Muong đác, Khmer ទឹក (tik), Bahnar đak, Eastern Mnong dak, Central Nicobarese râk/dâk; cognates outside MK include Santali ᱫᱟᱜ (dak’).
