Etymology
Unclear [1]. Possibly from an older *noshë, continuing Proto-Indo-European *néh₂s, *nh₂es, 'nose, nostrils', with the affricatization of the original final fricative (cf. çaj ~ shaj etc.). Semantically close to Old English nose, nosu (“ness, promontory”), Norwegian nōs (“muzzle, snout”).
