Possibly a borrowing from Sami, cf. Proto-Samic *noarvē (seal). Cognate with Northern Sami noarvi, Karelian ńorppa, Ludian ńorp. Russian нерпа (nerpa, seal of the genus "Pusa") is a borrowing from Finnic.
