Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ɲɔːmʔ (to dye; to lacquer (teeth)), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *nɟum ~ *nɟuum ~ *nɟuəm ~ *nɟəm (dark in colour). Cognate with Muong nhuỗm (to dye), Mon ယောံ (yòm, dark in colour), ခယောံ (həyòm, dark; dusky), Khmer ជាំ (cŏəm, bruised; dark; stained). Compare Chinese (nhiễm, to dye).
