Possibly from Proto-Albanian *engellā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engʷʰ-, compare Ancient Greek ἔγχελυς (énkhelus, eel), Latin anguilla (eel), Proto-Slavic *ǫgorjь (eel), Old High German angar (mealworm, larva, grub). A borrowing from Latin anguilla has also been proposed.[1]
