From archaic *ndërtokë (“*underground”), the first part ndër- (“under”) from *n̥dʰér and the second part tokë (“land, ground”), with an original meaning of "to lay foundations".Orel suggests a contraction of Romance *directare, with semantic problems,but the prefix ndër- makes the theory unlikely.
